Introduction

An Office Secretary I is work providing secretarial support to an official, administrator or administrative staff.  Employees in the Office Secretary I classification type on typewriters or keyboards of personal computer or computer terminals.

The resulting eligible list will be used to fill this vacancy only.

LOCATION OF POSITION

The current vacancy exists at the Eastern Correctional Institution, Westover Md. (Somerset County)

Main Purpose of Job

Provides secretarial/clerical support for Correctional Case Management Specialists and supervisors.   May be required to be back-up for Departmental Office Secretary.

POSITION DUTIES

Maintains assigned caseload of confidential inmate basefiles, which includes keeping alphabetical filing order, daily filing and typing daily case plan entries.

Records classification boards which includes inmate job assignments/changes, reclassification of security level and reassignments.

Types letters, memos, and other documents and reports for Case Management Specialists. 

Answers telephone extensions.  Screens and forwards outside calls to appropriate location/counselor and if necessary directs calls to the appropriate Case Management Specialist.

Performs secretarial duties in the absence of other departmental secretaries. 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: One year performing secretarial or clerical work involving typing duties.

Notes:

1. Additional secretarial or clerical experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Thirty credit hours with a major in secretarial science or office technology from an accredited college may be substituted at the rate of thirty credits for one year of experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Demonstrated ability to accurately type on a typewriter or keyboard on a personal computer, computer terminal or work processor at a minimum of forty words per minute may be required, depending on the specific requirements of the position.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
