Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment for the Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Geological Survey- Baltimore, Maryland location.  This recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies for this position/function only.  The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.  Persons interested in future vacancies within this classification must re-apply.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Geological Survey (MGS) in Baltimore, Maryland, is currently accepting applications for a Geologist III. The selected candidate will carry out several primary and diverse functions including field mapping projects in Maryland's Piedmont, Blue Ridge, Ridge and Valley, and Appalachian Plateaus Physiographic Provinces, and produce reports and GIS data derived from these studies. Investigations will include bedrock and/or surficial geologic mapping; GIS-based map production including cross-sections, geohazard maps; groundwater assessment reports, technical reports, and nontechnical educational publications. A significant portion of work time will be spent in the field, mapping in hilly, wooded or undeveloped land. These duties require an advanced working knowledge of geologic field mapping techniques, and a thorough understanding of sedimentary and metamorphic petrography and structural geology mapping.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science.

Experience: Three years of experience performing professional geological work.

Note:

1. Possession of a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in physical science classifications or physical science specialty codes in the geology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.  

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Experience with structural geologic mapping and lithologic identification.

2. Experience in digital cartography and geodatabase management.

3. Proven skills in report writing, required for final report production.

4. Experience with GPS systems operations; use of scientific, survey and sampling devices and equipment (coring, well logging, water level meters, etc).

5. Some experience with hydrologic/hydrogeologic mapping.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification may be required to walk over rough or unstable terrain or over long distances while wearing personal protective equipment.

2. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in on a twenty-four hour basis and, therefore, will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached or carry an electronic pager.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
