Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to supervise, guide, and direct Health Physics staff in the receipt, review, preparation and issuance of radioactive material licenses, amendments and renewals based upon the analysis of complete and accurate applications. This section supervisor will ensure that licensees are advised of deficiencies and inadequacies and receive sufficient assistance to quicken the overall licensing process. This position also guides and directs licensing staff in the evaluation, review, and certification of sealed source and device (SS&D) applications and the issuance and maintenance of the SS&D registry. Additionally, this Health Physicist Supervisor will participate in SSD evaluations, new license applications, renewals, complex licensing actions, and the evaluation of licensee financial assurance, facility decommissioning and license fee structuring as well as provide input for the promulgation of regulations needed to maintain Maryland's Agreement State compatibility status with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). This Section Supervisor provides guidance to the Division Chief on matters pertaining to licensing actions and SS&D activities, and is prepared to represent the Radioactive Materials Licensing and Compliance Division when needed.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 30 credits in mathematical, physical or biological sciences.

Experience: Five years of experience in the recognition, evaluation and control of radiological hazards.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in the recognition, evaluation and control of radiological hazards to employees and the general public on a year-for-year basis for required education.

2. Candidates may substitute a Doctorate in health physics, nuclear physics, radiation management or other related field of radiological health from an accredited college or university for three of the required years of experience.

3. Candidates may substitute a Master's degree in radiation safety, radiological health, health physics, or a related radiation control field from an accredited college or university for two years of the required experience.

4. Candidates may substitute a Master's degree in mathematical, biological, or physical science for one year of the required experience.

5. Candidates may substitute a Bachelor's degree in radiation safety, radiological health, health physics or a related radiation control field for one year of the required experience.

6. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health and Medical Physicist classifications or Health and Medical Physicist specialty codes in the Physicist field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

It is preferred that the selected candidate has the following:

  •  A Bachelor of Science degree;
  • 3 years of supervisory experience of a professional staff;
  • Experience in radiation safety management, health physics, or Nuclear Medicine; 
  • Experience in the processing/issuing/inspection of regulatory    
       licenses/permits/registrations;
  • Strong level of experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

Your application is part of the examination process.  The assessment will be a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of this position.  Therefore, it is important that you provide complete and accurate educational and employment information on your application.  Successful candidates will be ranked as Best Qualified, Better Qualified or Qualified and placed on the employment list for at least one year. This list will be used by the hiring agency to select employees.  Education credentials and experience verification will be completed by the Appointing Authority.  If you are scheduled to complete an education or licensing requirement within six months of the examination, you may participate in the examination process, if one is required.  Please note that you will be required by the appointing agency to provide proof upon hire of all certifications, licenses, educational and work experiences.
