Main Purpose of Job

This position is responsible for providing complex and comprehensive assistance to the Assistant Attorney General for the Maryland Board of Nursing regarding charge cases and also additional investigation and preparation of cases for hearing before the Board.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Three years of experience as a legal assistant or legal secretary performing legal research or preparing legal documents on behalf of an attorney.

Notes:

1. Thirty credit hours or a certificate in paralegal studies from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience.

2. Thirty credit hours from an accredited law school may be substituted for the required experience.

3. Additional years of experience as stated above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate should have knowledge of administrative law and the practices of legal research, pleading and hearing formats. The applicant should posses the ability to use and understand legal terminology, forms and documents. Must have the ability to prepare, draft and proofread pleadings, public orders and exhibits for legal hearings. The applicant must be knowledgeable of Federal, State and administrative court systems. The applicant should possess the ability to learn to interpret and apply laws.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
