LOCATION OF POSITION

This position is with the Maryland School for the Deaf, Columbia Campus located in Howard County.

Main Purpose of Job

An Electrician is the full performance level of unlicensed electrical work installing, repairing, testing and maintaining electrical systems including high-voltage service (13,000 or more volts), equipment, fixtures, and control devices. Employees in this classification do not supervise.

POSITION DUTIES

Perform skilled building maintenance tasks such as installing, repairing, testing and maintaining electrical systems, fixtures and control devices; this includes fluorescent and incandescent bulbs, ballasts, conduit tubing and electrical boxes, wiring, panels, generators, motors, compressors, relays, transformers, antennas, outlets, fans, washing and drying machines and ranges.  In addition fire, security, HVAC and communication systems, as well as underground and overhead distribution systems. Work involves special physical demands such as lifting 50 pounds or more, climbing ladders, etc.

This position is classified as essential personnel.  The incumbent must be willing and able to report to work in inclement weather and facility emergencies.

MINIMUM EDUCATION OR GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Education: Completion of the eighth grade.

Experience: Four years of experience installing, repairing, testing and maintaining electrical systems, equipment, fixtures and control devices at commercial or residential buildings or other facilities.

Notes:

1. Additional experience as described above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Graduation from an accredited vocational or technical high school or other vocational or technical school with a concentration in electricity may be substituted for three years of the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in 24-hours a day and may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

2. Employees in this classification who are designated as Level I or Level II employees shall attend and successfully complete the appropriate asbestos safety and health training as required by Executive Order 01.01.1987.22.

3.  Employee must be willing to learn American Sign Language.

4.  New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense ($34.50) per Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1. Sections 5-560-568.)
