Main Purpose of Job

This position serves as the primary coordinator between the environmental health and communicable disease response at both the state and local levels; including, but not limited to collecting trace-back information during foodborne outbreak investigations and coordinating ground-level trace-back at the local level, analysis of trace-back data looking for points of convergence/divergence, directing and collecting environmental samples and tracking results, collating environmental information with case investigation information to further identification of source of exposures, organizing, collecting and tracking samples for the RRT's food surveillance program. The position will also be responsible for all aspects of the RRT's computer system, excluding software development, but encompassing both deployment of computerized inspection and investigation reporting in the field and the quality of the data store in the multipurpose data base. As the database system is expanded to cover the local health jurisdictions across the State, this individual will need to establish uniformity on communications protocols, system architecture and development. Managing the transition of 24 jurisdictions to the use of electronic reporting will require significant project and communication skills. Overall the position requires the ability to successfully integrate office information support activities with field based activities during investigations and joint activity with Local Health Department food programs. We work in partnership with local health departments, providers, and community based organizations to provide public health leadership in the prevention, control, monitoring, and treatment of infectious diseases and environmental health hazards.

MINIMUM EDUCATION OR GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Education: Determined by the Maryland State Board of Environmental Sanitarians under the certificate of eligibility requirements for Environmental Sanitarians. A copy of your license, license verification or license number and expiration date must be attached to your application.

Experience: Four years of environmental health work experience in the promotion, control, and maintenance of environmental health, two years of which must have involved direction of an environmental control project and/or the supervision of positions performing environmental health work.

Note: Applicants may substitute a master’s degree in public health or environmental health sciences for one year of the required general experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired applicant should have training in food facility inspections, be able to work primarily on database communication systems, as well as travel throughout the state, and have excellent communication skills.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current license as a Registered Environmental Sanitarian from the Maryland State Board of Environmental Sanitarians. A photocopy of current registration must be attached to the application form (MS-100). A copy of your license, license verification or license number and expiration date must be attached to your application.

2. The licensure requirements are pursuant to State Environmental Article, Title 11, COMAR 26.07.01 through 26.07.04. The Secretary of the Department of Budget and Management cannot accept any substitutions.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
