Main Purpose of Job
This position directs, plans, organizes and controls the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division's daily activities. This also includes the operation of the Crime Scene Units located throughout the State of Maryland. The Director manages the output and quality of work of each unit through the Deputy Director and Assistant Commander.

MINIMUM EDUCATION OR GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION - Possession of a Master's degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, genetics, medical technology, pharmaceutical science, or related physical, natural or forensic science from an accredited college or university.
EXPERIENCE - Applicants must have a minimum of eight years of experience in comparative analysis or scientific evaluation of evidence including experience in providing court testimony as an expert forensic witness. Four of the eight years of experience must have been in a full-time supervisory or managerial capacity.
NOTE - Possession of a Doctorate degree in any of the above referenced disciplines from an accredited college or university may be substituted for two years of the required non-supervisory experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
EXPERIENCE - Applicants should have at least three years of experience in the overall management of an ASCLD/LAB accredited forensic laboratory. This experience should include both budget and grants management as well as direct interaction with legislative bodies (municipal, county or state) concerning current or future legislation.
Selection Plan
The selection process for this recruitment will involve a review of each application. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be placed on an eligible list in the BEST QUALIFIED category. The eligible list will be used by the hiring manager to select the individual to fill this vacancy. This list will be valid for one year.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
Persons appointed to this classification must possess the certification or license required by the governing body of the forensic discipline associated with the job duties for the specific position. Specific information concerning the requirements and procedures of the applicable governing body can be obtained from the Forensic Sciences Division of the Maryland Department of State Police, 221 Milford Mill Road, Pikesville, MD 21208.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Employees are subject to call 24 hours a day and, therefore, are required to provide the department with a telephone number or pager number where they can be reached.
Employees in this classification are subject to random substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulation 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
In accordance with Section 2-204 (b) (6) of the Public Safety Article, candidates for positions in this classification will be subject to an initial drug screening, submission of a DNA sample, and a complete criminal background investigation, to include a polygraph examination before permanent appointment can be made. A criminal conviction may be grounds for the rejection of the candidate.
