LOCATION OF POSITION

   Middletown, MD (Frederick County)

Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service/Western Region, is currently accepting    applications for a Forester I position located in Frederick County, Maryland. The forester will be stationed in the Washington Monument field office in Middletown, MD. This is a one-year renewable contract (contingent on funding).

Services required will be primarily performed on Frederick City Watershed. Work entails, but is not limited to, marking property lines, conducting forest inventory data collection, marking timber sales by prescription, developing recommendations for management of forest stands, invasive species control and recommendations, wildland fire suppression, wildlife habitat improvement projects, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) projects, and inspection of logging operations.

This position also assists with the Frederick County Backyard Buffers program and monitoring of research plantings related to hemlock woolly adelgid, and data collection in long-term buffer monitoring sites. Maintenance of equipment, as needed, that is used on Watershed property, and operation of the following equipment used in the above duties may apply: chainsaw, brush saws, tractors, ATV's, and other heavy equipment.

The position is full-time, 40 hours/week, with occasional weekend or evening obligations and occasional call-in obligations for fire emergencies. MINIMUM EDUCATION OR GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Education: A Bachelor of Science degree in forestry from a school of forestry accredited by the Society of American Foresters.

Experience: None

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute a Master of Science degree approved by the State Board of Foresters for the required Bachelor’s degree.

2. The education requirement is pursuant to Business Occupations and Professions Article, Sections 7-206 and 7-304 of the Annotated Code

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Persons appointed to this classification will be subject to assignment in any county of the State. Upon permanent appointment, the employee will be required to reside in the county or region to which they are assigned.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to call-in and, therefore, are required to submit a telephone number where they can be reached in case of forest fire emergencies.
