Introduction

The Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA) is an independent State agency that regulates Maryland’s insurance industry and protects Maryland consumers.  There are approximately 1,600 insurance companies and more than 135,000 insurance producers (agents and brokers) that conduct business in the State of Maryland and that impact Maryland citizens who purchase insurance products.  Through the diligence of a highly professional staff, the MIA works to facilitate a strong insurance marketplace where consumers are well informed and treated fairly.

Main Purpose of Job

The MIA is currently seeking a Market Data Analyst for its Compliance and Enforcement Unit.  This is a contractual position, with an initial term of 6 -12 months, subject to renewal based on need.  This position is responsible primarily for monitoring, collecting, validating and interpreting insurance industry data in support of the MIA’s assessment of the business practices of insurers and other regulated entities. The Market Data Analyst assists in developing and implementing methods, procedures, systems and analytic techniques for market data analysis. The position also serves as technical liaison to MIA and various external data management and systems departments.   The incumbent must be able to multi-task and work effectively both independently and cooperatively.  Occasional travel and attendance at various training, industry or regulatory seminars and meetings is required.

MINIMUM EDUCATION OR GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university. 
  • Knowledge of statistical and quantitative analysis procedures and techniques through college coursework or previous work experience is required. Please make sure to highlight this on your resume.
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with processing, analyzing or auditing large-scale electronic data files is preferred.
  • Two or more years of experience with insurance regulation and compliance, insurance data analysis, health care data analysis or actuarial analysis is preferred, but not required.
