Introduction
The Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA) is an independent State agency that regulates Maryland’s insurance industry and protects Maryland consumers. There are approximately 1,600 insurance companies and more than 135,000 insurance producers (agents and brokers) that conduct business in the State of Maryland and that impact Maryland citizens who purchase insurance products. Through the diligence of a highly professional staff, the MIA works to facilitate a strong insurance marketplace where consumers are well informed and treated fairly.

Main Purpose of Job
The Maryland Insurance Administration is recruiting for the position of Investment Specialist for its Examination and Auditing Section. The Examination and Auditing Section is charged with regulating the financial solvency of all insurance companies operating in Maryland. Working directly with the Associate Commissioner and other insurance professionals, the Investment Specialist is an integral part of our leadership team. This position researches and provides guidance on complex investment issues, investment products and financial transactions (e.g., derivatives, credit default swaps, etc.); reviews insurer investment portfolios and investment plans; assists with financial analysis and examination projects; identifies significant issues and risk areas and recommends solutions; and provides training on investment issues. Strong investment analysis, analytical, communication and computer skills are required. Some travel within Maryland and out of State is also required.
MINIMUM EDUCATION OR GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field.
Experience: Four years of experience evaluating investments and making recommendations to businesses/individuals concerning investment decisions.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
An MBA, Chartered Financial Analyst or CFA candidate, Investment Professional in Insurance Regulation (iPIR), or equivalent designation is preferred. Extensive investment experience, particularly in an insurance environment, is desired.
