This is a position specific recruitment for Montgomery County Veterans Service Center. This recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies for this position/function only. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year. Persons interested in future vacancies within this classification must re-apply.

Main Purpose of Job

Veteran Benefits Specialist I is the intermediate level of work assisting veterans and their dependents in obtaining State, federal and local benefits and services. Employees in this classification interview veterans and their dependents, verify information and determine eligibility for benefits and services. Employees in this classification do not supervise.

POSITION DUTIES

This position initiates and presents claims for compensation, pension, entitlements and other benefits to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and other agencies on behalf of veterans, their eligible dependents, and their survivors. Helping veterans and their dependents receive the benefits to which they are entitled is a requirement set forth in the Annotated Code of Maryland, State Government Article Subtitle 9.

MINIMUM EDUCATION OR GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Education:     Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalence certificate.

Experience:   None

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

Excellent oral and written communications skills.

Experience rending advice and services to veterans and their families.

Experience in administering Veterans Administration's policies, regulations and procedures.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

Limited to applicants willing to accept employment in Montgomery County, MD.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Title 38, United States Code, Section 5901-5905 requires that candidates appointed to positions in this classification must be certified as a veterans’ services counselor by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs within one year of employment.

2. Candidates appointed to positions within this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The written examination is designed to measure the candidates’ knowledge, skills, and abilities as they relate to the duties of this job classification.

 

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
