ELK NECK STATE PARK (Cecil County, MD)

Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Park Service, is currently accepting applications for a Lead Trails Technician at Elk Neck State Park located in Cecil County. Applicants must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions. This position is responsible for the maintenance and construction associated with a large trail network within the park, based on guidelines set forth by the USDA Forest Service and the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA). Applicants must be able to lift 50lbs., hike trails of varying difficulty, and be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions. The shift hours for this position may vary; examples of shift hours include 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. Weekly hours will vary seasonally. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled.

Additionally, this position will be responsible for, but not limited to:

  • Operating a variety of hand tools to include, but not limited to, hammers; hand saws; hand pruners; loppers; Adze Hoe; Rogue Hoe; McLeod; Pulaski; Fire Rake; garden rake; shovel; sledge hammer; pick; mattock and axes.  
  • Operating power hand tools to include, but not limited to, a circular saw; reciprocating saw; drills of various types; gasoline powered hedge trimmers; gasoline powered chainsaws of various sizes.
  • Leading trail work crews that might consist of employees from within the Department of Natural Resources and/or other allied agencies and/or volunteers from various backgrounds.
  • Leading the monthly trail work crews Leading and directing other trail technicians and staff as related to trails.
  • Overseeing routine maintenance on all equipment used.
  • Overseeing inventories of the trail shop and proper marking on all trail equipment.
  • Assuring all equipment safety requirements are met while working on the trails.
  • Upkeep of current trail marking system.
  • Submitting to the Area Manager a daily work log and communicating to the Area Manager issues arising on Elk Neck’s Trail System.
  • Interacting with the public to include answering questions and educating trail users of proper trail etiquette.
  • Assisting Park Ranger personnel with daily operational needs.

MINIMUM EDUCATION OR GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Education: Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent

Experience: Basic hand tool, hand power tool, equipment familiarity and operation are required.

  • Experience in the field of park maintenance/operations, recreation, forestry, trails, landscaping, construction or agriculture are preferred.
  • *Please provide any certifications relating to your experience at the time of application.

Notes:

  • Applicants must be at least 21 years old. 
  • Applicants must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Weekly hours and contract period are flexible and subject to change.
  • Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. 
  • Applicants must have the ability to understand verbal and written instructions.  
  • Applicants must adhere to all State and Federal laws, safety regulations, and must understand and adhere to all park policies.  
  • Applicant must present a neat and clean appearance and wear issued uniform correctly.  
  • Contract start and end dates are flexible and subject to change.
