Introduction

The Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA) is an independent State agency that regulates Maryland’s insurance industry and protects Maryland consumers.  There are approximately 1,600 insurance companies and more than 135,000 insurance producers (agents and brokers) that conduct business in the State of Maryland and that impact Maryland citizens who purchase insurance products.  Through the diligence of a highly professional staff, the MIA works to facilitate a strong insurance marketplace where consumers are well informed and treated fairly.

Main Purpose of Job

The MIA’s Consumer Education and Advocacy Unit (CEAU) is recruiting for the contractual position of Outreach Staffer.  This individual must be fluent in Spanish and English for speaking, reading and writing purposes.  This position is responsible for attending and staffing outreach events that includes many evenings and weekends; assisting with the operation of the CEAU Rapid Response Program; and handling disaster response for those insured in the State of Maryland.  In addition, this position will focus on the health side of the insurance industry and will provide related information at outreach events, as well as draft materials related to health insurance and policy.  Possession of a vehicle and valid driver’s license is required for extensive in-state travel (approximately 60-70%).  This position involves special physical demands such as the ability to life 50 plus pounds, climb ladders, lift and set up supplies and exhibits.

MINIMUM EDUCATION OR GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Education:  Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience:  Two (2) years of experience in the property, casualty, life or health insurance industry as an agent, adjuster, examiner, investigator, underwriter, or customer service representative.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • College degree at an accredited college or university.
  • Excellent organization and communication (verbal and written) skills.
  • Familiarity with Maryland State laws and regulations and the Health Care Reform legislation.
