Main Purpose of Job
The Maryland Department of Planning leads Maryland's Smart Growth efforts. The Department is a committed team of innovative and driven individuals dedicated to planning and protecting Maryland's communities. We work to preserve environmental, historic and community resources, including the Chesapeake Bay, while simultaneously fostering development strategies that will enrich the future for Maryland residents.
Currently, MDP is seeking an experienced and highly motivated manager as a Director of Communications to lead a dynamic team in creating Departmental products and services used to educate Maryland's policy makers and citizens. The position will coordinate overall communications, marketing, media relations, policy and public information, outreach activities and legislative review for the Department.
POSITION DUTIES
This position is a Political Special Appointment and will work closely with the MDP Secretary, Deputy Secretary and senior staff and be directly involved in managing the following areas: integration of cutting-edge graphic design to develop websites and social media marketing strategies; production of print publications; preparation and research of grant opportunities; and coordination of the Departmental stance on legislative and policy matters. The position will also oversee the promotion of accessibility to external educational opportunities, internal professional development, library services and website applications.
Candidate must be able to demonstrate the following: knowledge of social media marketing techniques and strategies; strong written, editorial, oral communication and interpersonal skills; and digital storytelling abilities, in words, pictures, audio and video outlets.
MINIMUM EDUCATION OR GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Journalism, Communications, Business Administration, Marketing or related field.
Experience: Eight years of professional experience in journalism, communications, marketing, internet or social media marketing, or other related field. Three years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
Note: Candidates may substitute a Master’s degree on a year-for-year basis, up to two years, for the required professional experience.
