Introduction

The Maryland Department of General Services is the State agency which provides custodial and housekeeping services within State owned and operated buildings located in Annapolis. We also provide outside groundskeeping for these facilities. Annapolis is the State capital of Maryland, and is located in Anne Arundel County, approximately 30 miles south of Baltimore. We maintain both modern and historic buildings within the complex.

We regularly have both full-time and part-time positions open in Annapolis. These are regular State positions, with full State benefits.

LOCATION OF POSITION

These positions are located in the historic district of Annapolis, Anne Arundel County.

Main Purpose of Job

A Building Services Worker is the full performance level of work providing maintenance, housekeeping, and general services for State buildings. Employees in this classification do not supervise.  This is an Emergency Essential position, which requires the employee to report to work during emergencies and in all weather conditions.

We offer both full-time dayshift positions, and evening part-time positions.  

POSITION DUTIES

Examples of work include:

  • collects, recycles, and disposes of trash and other items;
  • cleans floors, hallways and stairways;
  • waxes and buffs floors, hallways and stairways;
  • shampoos and vacuums rugs and upholstered furniture;
  • cleans and disinfects restrooms and replaces supplies;
  • loads and unloads supplies and equipment;
  • moves office furniture and equipment;
  • sets up chairs and tables for meetings and events.

MINIMUM EDUCATION OR GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Education: None.

Experience: None.

We seek applicants with:

  • the ability to apply the methods, materials and equipment used to clean, maintain and service State buildings;
  • the ability to apply the methods, materials and techniques used in routine building and equipment maintenance and repair;
  • the ability to safely use, adjust and maintain manual and power tools and equipment used in cleaning, maintaining and servicing State buildings;
  • the ability to clean and maintain indoor and outdoor areas;
  • the ability to move heavy objects;
  • the ability to read warning labels and directions for safe use of supplies, materials and equipment;
  • the ability to follow instructions.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

Because of access to sensitive locations, applicants who progess through the selection process will be subject to a criminal history background check.

Applicants may be subject to a medical examination during the final stages of the selection process.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
