Main Purpose of Job

To ensure equity in commercial transactions between buyers and sellers of commodities, goods and services pursuant to the requirements of Title 11, Agriculture Article Annontated Code of Maryland which is Maryland's Weights and Measures Law.

POSITION DUTIES

The Maryland Department of Agriculture is recruiting to fill three (3) Agricultural Inspector I positions located in its Weights & Measures Program. These positions will inspect and test scales and liquid measuring devices to determine the accuracy of measurement devices. The incumbent will also test and inspect packages to ensure accurate contents and compliance with labeling regulations. After sufficient training the person will be responsible for testing propane tanks and vehicle scales. The incumbent will determine compliance with Maryland Weights and Measures Laws and complete all appropriate report forms. The employee will be assigned a State vehicle to use when performing job duties.

MINIMUM EDUCATION OR GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: One year of experience in the installation, inspection, repair, and/or testing of weighing, volumetric measuring and/or counting devices or inspection of labeling and packaging.

Note: Additional education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at a rate of 15 credit hours for each year of the required experience. Qualifying education must include specific courses in the subject areas shown below: Physical Sciences, mathematics, engineering, or law enforcement.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator license’s valid in the State of Maryland.

SELECTION PROCESS

Only candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be considered for this position.  Successful candidates will be ranked as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED, or QUALIFIED and placed on the employment (eligible) list for at least one year.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
