NATURE OF WORK

The Laboratory Technician I is the full performance level of technical laboratory work with responsibility for a component of laboratory work to include responsibility for specific testing activities, such as tuberculosis culturing, identification and reporting. The Forensic Science option is used only at the Maryland Department of State Police. Employees in this classification do not supervise other laboratory workers but may oversee the work of clerical staff.

Employees receive general supervision from a scientist or a Laboratory Technician II. Work is performed in a laboratory setting.

Positions in this classification are evaluated using the Classification Job Evaluation Methodology. The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of a class specification.

The Laboratory Technician I is differentiated from the Laboratory Technician II in that the Laboratory Technician II supervises lower-level Laboratory Technicians while the Laboratory Technician I does not supervise but performs the full range of duties under general supervision.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Performs a component of scientific laboratory work under the supervision of a scientist or a Laboratory Technician II; Performs a variety of examinations, tests or analyses on specimens in various fields such as bacteriology, serology, environmental chemistry, clinical chemistry and environmental microbiology; Prepares specialized bacteriological culture media and reagents; Keeps records and prepares reports. Arranges, cleans and cares for laboratory equipment and apparatus; Makes charts, tabulates and maintains records; Performs other related duties.
