NATURE OF WORK

A Maintenance Assistant is the full performance level of semi-skilled work in the maintenance trades.  Employees in this classification independently perform moderately complex tasks in maintenance work, including routine construction work, routine preventive maintenance, and making minor repairs or improvements to buildings, fixtures, mechanical equipment, grounds and roadways.  Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions but may serve as lead workers of other employees or may lead small groups of patients or inmates in routine assignments.

Employees in this classification receive general administrative supervision from a Maintenance Chief.  The more highly skilled work is generally performed under the technical supervision of an experienced tradesperson or is closely inspected by a tradesperson when work is completed.  Supervision is always available from a tradesperson.

Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology.  The use of this method involves comparing assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work Sections of the class specification.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Makes minor repairs and alterations on floors, windows, furniture, and other wooden structures or appurtenances;

Caulks doors and windows;

Changes filters, checks and maintains sewer lines and cleans traps;

Repairs extension cords;

Oils and lubricates electrical or mechanical equipment and machines;

Prepares interior and exterior walls, ceiling, floors and other building surfaces by washing, brushing, and sanding and scraping;

Applies paints, varnishes, stains, waterproofing agents and other protectives;

Makes minor repairs to grounds construction such as roadways, walkways, footbridges and retaining walls;

Patches block, brick and stone walls;

Applies water-proofing agents to retaining walls;

Assists Grounds Keeper in maintenance of lawns and shrubbery;

Builds, constructs, and/or erects wooden and wire fencing;

May inspect buildings and grounds for adherence to institutional safety and sanitary regulations;

May drive automobiles, pick-up and panel trucks, and tractors; may operate power mowers;

May assist Stationary Engineers in performing maintenance and repair work in a boiler-room facility;

Performs other related duties.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System.  All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions.  Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.

This classification is not assigned to a bargaining unit, as indicated by the designation of S (Supervisor), M (Manager), T (Agency Head), U (Board or Commission Member), W (Student), X (Used by Agency or Excluded by Executive Order), or Z (Confidential).  As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded collective bargaining.  Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.

Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation.  An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime, as provided by the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.
