NATURE OF WORK

An Architectural Technician I is the entry professional level of architectural technical design work or advanced sub-professional level of architectural technical design work involving the preparation of preliminary technical designs and working drawings of architectural features of proposed limited scope and complexity building construction or alteration projects.  Employees in this classification develops initial design concepts and architectural drawings, construction specifications, suggested materials and cost estimates from preliminary sketches, field visits and interviews with representatives of the using agency.   Employees in this classification also perform field investigations of State-owned buildings and structures to determine the feasibility and estimated cost for renovation, alteration or replacement.  Employees in this classification may supervise architectural drafting positions that prepare detailed drawings based on established technical design concepts.  

Employees in this classification receive general supervision from program administrators or technical supervisors.  Work assignments and technical directions may be received from professional architects or engineers.  Proposed technical design concepts and construction specifications require considerable independent judgement, but are subject to review for architectural technical sufficiency.   

Positions in this classification are evaluated using the classification job evaluation methodology.  The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work Sections of a class specification.  

The Architectural Technician I and the Architectural Technician II are differentiated on the basis of degree of supervisory control exercised by the supervisor over these employees.   The Architectural Technician I performs the duties under close supervision while the Architectural Technician II performs the full range of duties and responsibilities under general supervision.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Designs, prepares and/or reviews preliminary drawings of the technical architectural features for proposed structures;

Prepares detailed recommendations for construction specifications, cost estimates and building materials for building construction or renovation of limited complexity;

Surveys existing buildings in State institutions and agencies for the purpose of completing a space inventory;

Conducts field investigations and consults with representatives of various agencies in order to gather information regarding layout and design of a certain facility;

Provides technical advice concerning the design and construction of proposed buildings or building alteration and renovation;

May supervise the activities and review the work of a group of drafting employees engaged in the preparation of architectural drawings and other complex graphic representations;

Performs other necessary duties as required.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Specific educational and experience requirements are set by the agency based on the essential job functions assigned to the position.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System.  All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions.  Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.

This classification is not assigned to a bargaining unit, as indicated by the designation of S (Supervisor), M (Manager), T (Agency Head), U (Board or Commission Member), W (Student), X (Used by Agency or Excluded by Executive Order), or Z (Confidential).  As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded collective bargaining.  Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.

Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation.  An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime, as provided by the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.
