NATURE OF WORK

A Natural Resources Police Captain is one of four managerial levels of law enforcement work in the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) enforcing State and federal laws and departmental rules and regulations as they apply to conservation, boating, DNR managed lands, criminal, civil and traffic violations. Employees in this classification have total responsibility for law enforcement operations in an assigned region/division. Employees in this classification directly supervise Natural Resources Police Lieutenants and through them indirectly supervise other natural resources police officers.

Employees receive managerial supervision from a Natural Resources Police Major or other higher ranking officer. Employees are subject to call-in 24 hours a day during emergencies and staffing shortages and may work varying shifts. Employees may be required to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions and may be exposed to toxic fumes and other hazards. The work may involve lifting objects weighing fifty pounds or more, climbing, crouching, crawling, walking and running.

Positions in this classification are evaluated using the Classification Job Evaluation Methodology. The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of a class specification.

Natural Resources Police Captain is differentiated from Natural Resources Police Major in that a Natural Resources Police Major has managerial responsibility for law enforcement operations statewide, while a Natural Resources Police Captain is responsible for operations in an assigned region division. Natural Resources Police Captain differs from Natural Resources Police Lieutenant in that a Natural Resources Police Lieutenant directly supervises Natural Resources Police Sergeants, while a Natural Resources Police Captain directly supervises Natural Resources Police Lieutenants.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Plans, organizes and directs the work of Natural Resources Police Lieutenants and through them other natural resources police officers and other employees;

Oversees the entire law enforcement operation in an assigned geographic region/division;

Prepares and manages a budget;

Prepares short and long range plans;

Reviews financial, statistical, operational and special reports;

Approves requests for supplies, materials and equipment;

Directs the implementation of new and revised operating policies;

Prepares and revises legislative bills and fiscal notes;

Trains and instructs natural resources police officers and other employees regarding policies, procedures and practices;

Performs other related duties.
