NATURE OF WORK

A Linen Service Officer is the full performance level of work supervising the activities of patients or juveniles engaged in the issue, repair, marking, and laundering of linens and clothing of a State facility or institution.  Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions.

Employees in this classification work under the direction of a Linen Service Supervisor or other designated personnel.  Employees in this classification may be required to wear protective equipment such as goggles, gloves and masks when handling soiled laundry.

Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology.  The use of this method involves comparing assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work Sections of the class specification.

The Linen Service Officer is differentiated from the Linen Service Supervisor in that the Linen Service Officer performs the full range of laundry duties and responsibilities supervising the activities of patients or juveniles engaged in the issuance, repair, marking and laundering of linens/clothing while the Linen Service Supervisor has supervisory responsibility for Linen Service Officers and Linen Service Workers.  The Linen Service Officer is differentiated from the Linen Service Worker in that the Linen Service Worker performs the full range of laundry care duties and responsibilities without the help of patients or juveniles under general supervision.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Receives requisitions from the Linen Service Supervisor for various cottages, wards and/or other areas regarding requests for linen and clothing distribution;

Maintains records of all clothing issued;

Conducts inventory of stock on a regular basis;

Trains and monitors the work of other personnel, patients or juveniles assigned to assist in clothing operations;

Inspects clothing and linens and determines the need for repair or replacement;

Inspects clothing and linens for proper tags, and sorts, folds, and places on shelves;

Marks items as received in the sewing room, upon purchase from the manufacturer;

May serve as clothing room aide in an assigned area of a facility or institution;

Performs other related duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to learn the operation and care of linen marking equipment;

Ability to learn methods of receiving, inventory tracking and marking clothing and linens;

Ability to learn methods of issuing linens and garments;

Ability to learn methods of inspecting clothing and linens;

Ability to direct the activities of patient or juvenile help;

Ability to follow and understand instructions;

Ability to maintain inventory;

Ability to maintain clothing and linen stock through the preparation of necessary forms and requisitions;

Ability to maintain satisfactory working relationships with other employees and patients or juveniles.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   8th grade.

Experience: Six months of full-time experience in the care, handling and storage of linens in a hospital, hotel or other large facility or institution.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Laundry and Ship Serviceman classifications or Laundry specialty codes in the laundry field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

Class specifications are broad descriptions covering groups of positions used by various State departments and agencies. Position descriptions maintained by the using department or agency specifically address the essential job functions of each position.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System.  All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions.  Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.

This classification is assigned to Bargaining Unit A- Labor and Trades classes.  As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded from collective bargaining.  Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.

Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation.  An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime, as provided by the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.
