NATURE OF WORK

A Cartographer I is the entry level of professional cartographic work in State Service.  Employees in this classification research, compile, and prepare cartographic information for inclusion into various projects, cartographic graphics, and illustrated reports.  Employees in this classification may on occasion lead lower-level Drafters or less experienced personnel.

Employees in this classification receive close supervision and direction from a higher level Cartographer or other administrative official.

Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology. The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification.

The Cartographer I and the Cartographer II are differentiated on the basis of degree of supervisory control exercised by the supervisor over the employees.  The Cartographer I performs the duties under close supervision while the Cartographer II performs the full range of duties and responsibilities under general supervision.
