NATURE OF WORK

This is responsible work in the field of institutional laundry management. An employee in this class is responsible for the operation of a medium-sized State institutional laundry processing not less than 100,000 pounds of laundry per month.

This employee plans, organizes and supervises the work of the laundry. The employee must have the requisite background and knowledge of modern laundry processes, techniques and equipment necessary for the efficient management of a laundry facility. The employee is responsible for maintaining precise production schedules to insure an adequate supply of clean laundry and linens and for maintaining a high standard of finished work. The employee is responsible for the proper training and safety of employees, inmates and/or patient helpers.

General direction is received from a higher-level administrator. Work effectiveness is evaluated through review of production schedules, quality of finished work, upkeep of equipment operational cost factors and safety records of laundry personnel. Direct supervision is exercised over assigned employees, inmates and/or patient helpers.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Trains, assigns and supervises employees, inmates and/or patient helpers assigned to laundry operations, including: pick-up delivery services; weighing, sorting, washing, extracting, finishing, packaging; keeping records and maintaining supplies and equipment;

Devises and improves operations methods and procedures as necessary;

Plans and organizes work schedules to meet necessary requirements;

Determines need for supplies and equipment and issues requisitions for same;

Supervises the use and preparation of proper amounts of soap, starch, bluing and other laundry compounds and supplies;

Prepares and submits reports concerning production, efficiency and conduct of employees, accidents and other reports as required;

May bear responsibility for maintaining order and discipline among inmates during their assignment to the laundry;

Performs other necessary duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of modern laundry processes, techniques and equipment including heavy duty washing machines, extractors, dryers, flat ironers, folders and pressing units; of the preparation of compounds used in washing and finishing clothes and fabrics; of laundry management methods and procedures.

Ability to manage a complete laundry operation; to organize, coordinate and supervise the work of employees, inmates and/or patient helpers; to instruct new employees, inmates and/or patient helpers; to deal with persons of anti-social and asocial behavior; to analyze replacement, repair and service records for identifying trends in maintenance costs and unusual expense factors respecting laundry equipment; to analyze and improve operational procedures; to work harmoniously with representatives of other institutions; to prepare reports; to think clearly and exercise forceful initiative in emergency situation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: One year of experience as a Laundry Supervisor. OR Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a State high school equivalence certificate.

Experience: Three years experience in a State or commercial laundry operation one year of which must have included either managerial responsibility or supervisory experience involving responsibility for all phases of laundry operations such as washing, extracting and finishing.

Note: 

1. Experience in a coin-operated laundry is not qualifying

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Laundry and Ship Serviceman classifications or Laundry specialty codes in the laundry field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
