NATURE OF WORK

This is responsible work in the management of a medium-sized laundry. At most of these facilities, the majority of the workers are prisoners in the custody of the Department of Correction. The work requires thorough technical knowledge of all laundry processes normally associated with a commercial linen supply laundry. The position bears responsibility for planning and directing the work of this laundry, and maintaining a high standard of finished work.

Production schedules are precise and completely geared to the needs of one or more institutions for clean bed linen, garments and other such essential items. Therefore, an employee in this class must have the requisite knowledge and abilities for directing a group of employees and/or inmates in performing the work necessary for meeting these schedules.

Administrative direction is received from an Assistant Warden, Assistant Superintendent or other designated official. Guidance in various technical and related matters may be available from staff personnel in various State agencies. An employee in this class provides direct supervision to work foremen and other assigned personnel, who in turn supervise the work of a large group of inmate workers

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Directs and coordinates all laundry operations including: pick-up delivery services; weighing, sorting, washing, extracting, finishing, packaging; keeping records and maintaining supplies and equipment;

Devises and improves operational methods and procedures as necessary;

Maintains established laundry schedule and revises same as needs demand;

Investigates and adjusts all complaints and maintains good customer relations;

Determines the need of supplies and equipment and initiates requisitions for same;

Supervises the maintenance and minor repair of laundry equipment;

Supervises and trains employees of the laundry;

Exercises responsibility for supervising and training of any inmates assigned to the laundry;

Bears responsibility for maintaining order and discipline among inmates during their assignment to the laundry;

Prepares and submits reports concerning production, efficiency and conduct of employees, and inmates, and accidents;

May supervise the billing of customers;

Performs other necessary duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of modern laundry processes, techniques and equipment including heavy-duty washing machines, extractors, dryers, flat ironers, folders and pressing units; of the preparation of compounds used in washing and finishing clothes and fabrics.

General knowledge of the principles and practices of laundry management.

Ability to manage a complete laundry operation; to organize, coordinate and supervise the work of employees and inmates workers; to instruct new employees and inmate workers; to deal with persons of anti-social and asocial behavior; to analyze replacement, repair and service records for identifying trends in maintenance costs and unusual expense factors respecting laundry equipment; to analyze and improve operational procedures; to work harmoniously with representatives of other institutions; to prepare reports; to make clear and pertinent statements to remember names and faces; to think clearly and exercise forceful initiative in emergency situations

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: One year’s experience in the State classifications of Laundry Manager I, Laundry Foreman, or two years experience in the State classification of Laundry Supervisor II.

OR

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a State high school equivalence certificate.

Experience: Four years of experience in a laundry similar to a commercial linen supply laundry. Two years of this experience must have included managerial responsibility.

Note: 

1. Experience in a coin-operated laundry is not qualifying

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Laundry and Ship Serviceman classifications or Laundry specialty codes in the laundry field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
