NATURE OF WORK

A Maryland State Police (MSP) Deputy Director, Forensic Sciences is one of three managerial levels of work in the chemical, biological, physical or comparative analysis of criminal evidence in the Forensic Sciences Division of the Maryland State Police.  The employee in this classification assists the MSP Director, Forensic Sciences in administering and operating the forensic sciences crime laboratory of the Maryland State Police.  The employee in this classification supervises MSP Forensic Scientist Managers.

The employee in this classification receives managerial supervision from the MSP Director, Forensic Sciences.

Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology. The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification.

The MSP Deputy Director, Forensic Sciences is differentiated from the MSP Forensic Scientist Manager in that the MSP Deputy Director, Forensic Sciences assists the MSP Director, Forensic Sciences and has direct supervisory responsibility for MSP Forensic Scientist Managers while MSP Forensic Scientist Manager has supervisory responsibility for MSP Forensic Scientist Supervisors. The MSP Deputy Director, Forensic Services is differentiated from the MSP Director, Forensic Services in that the MSP Director, Forensic Services has overall responsibility for the operation of the Forensic Sciences Division.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Directs the daily operation of the Scientific Analysis Section in the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division;

Manages the quality assurance and grants management programs within the Division; Assists the MSP Director,

Forensic Sciences in directing the daily operation of the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division;

Recommends policies, procedures, goals and objectives for the Forensic Science Division and the Scientific Analysis Section of the Maryland State Police and assists in evaluating its effectiveness;  

Oversees the qualitative and quantitative aspects of the Division and assures the quality of forensic work performed by the Division staff;

Manages and oversees the Forensic Sciences Division in the absence of the MSP Director, Forensic Sciences;

Monitors, through Division staff, compliance with applicable accreditation standards and criteria;

Provides expert direction and guidance to staff in solving complex technical problems related to scientific and comparative analyses;

Assists in preparing the Division’s annual budget; Interviews and hires crime laboratory personnel and makes recommendations for disciplinary actions, terminations or promotions for laboratory staff;

Proposes new legislation and makes recommendations to the MSP Director, Forensic Sciences concerning new or revised legislation affecting the Forensic Sciences Division;

Serves as second in command of the Mass Disaster Response Team;

Maintains an awareness of the current technologies, theories and practices in the field of forensic sciences by reviewing relevant literature, conducting research, and attending and participating in local and national professional development activities;

Performs other related duties.
