An Automotive Services Mechanic is the full performance level of work in the field of routine automotive services. Employees in this classification do not supervise other Automotive Services Mechanics.

Employees in this classification receive general supervision from an Automotive Services Supervisor, Automotive Services Specialist or other designated staff. Employees perform work in a garage or outside in extremes of heat and cold. Employees may be exposed to hazardous chemicals. The work may require the use of protective equipment such as safety goggles, face shields and gloves when performing automotive services. The work may involve the lifting and moving of heavy objects such as heavy automotive components.

Positions in this classification are evaluated using the classification job evaluation methodology. The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of a class specification.

The Automotive Services Mechanic is differentiated from the Automotive Services Specialist in that the Automotive Services Mechanic performs routine automotive services duties and responsibilities under general supervision while the Automotive Services Specialist performs advanced level automotive services.

Inspects and determines the nature of routine motor vehicle malfunctions;

Checks, assembles, repairs or replaces generators, starter motors, wiper blades, fan belts, ball joints, brake linings, wheel bearings and various other standard parts;

Performs engine tune ups and adjustments to valves, spark plug gaps, ignition systems, lights, brakes and clutches;

Lubricates, changes oil, fuels, cleans or greases parts and performs other automotive services;

Cleans and cares for tools, equipment and shop facilities;

Road test automobiles, trucks, tractors or other motor vehicles;

Maintains records and prepares reports;

May perform welding tasks;

Performs other related duties.

Knowledge of the procedures, methods, tools and equipment used in the service, maintenance, repair and adjustment of motor vehicles and motor equipment;

Knowledge of the proper use, care and maintenance of standard hand and power tools;

Knowledge of the principles and techniques of welding;

Skill in the use of standard mechanical tools and equipment;

Ability to diagnose and correct routine motor vehicle malfunctions;

Ability to understand and carry out instructions;

Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.

Education:   Completion of the eighth grade.

Experience: Two years of experience servicing, maintaining and repairing motor vehicles or motor equipment.

Notes:

1. Graduation from an accredited vocational/technical high school with a major in automotive mechanics, or a related field, may be substituted for the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Mechanic classifications or Automotive Maintenance Technician and Vehicle Maintenance specialty codes in the Mechanic or Maintenance field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

Class specifications are broad descriptions covering groups of positions used by various State departments and agencies. Position descriptions maintained by the using department or agency specifically address the essential job functions of each position.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System.  All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions.  Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.  

This classification is assigned to Bargaining Unit A, Labor and Trades classes.  As provided by the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded from collective bargaining.  Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.  

Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation. An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime, as provided by the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.
