Main Purpose of Job

Serves as Special Assistant to the Secretary supporting him and the Chief of Staff with the cascading and dissemination of strategic messaging to all support Agencies and Divisions under the responsibility of the MD Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. With the guidance of the Secretary, does research and communicates with various officials in State Government including Legislators, Executives, Agency Heads, and leaders in both the public and private sector regarding policy, practices, and administration of correctional programs and practices.

POSITION DUTIES

Serve as representative of the Secretary to provide immediate assistance and guidance in matters of high priority and concern to the Department.

Serve as a public representative for the Secretary on Boards, Commissions, and inter-governmental meetings as directed  by the Secretary.

Focus on Department’s mission and communicate Secretary’s vision to other employees and members of the public.

Provide information and guidance to the Secretary and Executive Staff on key issues both internal and external affecting the Department.

Act in a liaison capacity with the Deputy Secretaries, Assistant Secretaries, Chief of Staff, departmental agency heads, and Office of the Secretary directors to gather or report information, coordinate various projects, and assist in carrying out special tasks directly assigned by the Secretary.

Provide direction to agency heads, division directors, and other staff regarding the Secretary’s objectives concerning administrative issues, programs and special projects

Direct and coordinate with departmental staff regarding projects that require departmental participation or compliance.

MINIMUM EDUCATION OR GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.

Two years of work experience in Local, State or Federal government. 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The preferred candidate should possess the following skills and abilities:

A self-motivated individual with strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively. 

Ability to manage work with minimal direct supervision.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to effectively present oral and written information. 

SELECTION PROCESS

This is a position specific recruitment for Designated Administrative Manager IV, Special Assistant to the Secretary.  This recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies for this position/function only.  The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.  Persons interested in future vacancies within this classification must re-apply.
