MAJOR FUNCTION

Performs law enforcement trainee duties to become certified as a law enforcement officer and eligible for promotion to Law Enforcement Deputy.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Employees in this classification perform trainee duties of average difficulty requiring limited initiative and independent judgment under immediate supervision.

MAJOR DUTIES

Note: The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform some or all of the activities described below.

Note: Incumbents function in a trainee capacity to gain proficiency in the duties listed below and become eligible for promotion to Law Enforcement Deputy.

  • Patrols assigned areas to detect and monitor possible criminal activity and interrogates suspicious persons.
  • Responds to emergency calls to provide assistance.
  • Investigates incidents for civil or criminal law violations.
  • Apprehends and arrests suspected law violators to ensure public safety.
  • Prepares and preserves evidence in accordance with directives to maintain chain of custody.
  • Testifies in court to provide an accurate account of investigation findings.
  • Controls activities at traffic accident scenes by assisting victims or maintaining traffic flow.
  • Enforces traffic laws by observing violations and issuing citations.
  • Provides information and assistance to the public.
  • Prepares and submits daily activity reports in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOP) and directives.
  • Transports prisoners to court, medical or prison facilities.
  • Maintains patrol car, weapons and other law enforcement equipment to insure operational readiness.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

Note: To be acquired during the training period.

  • Working knowledge of local, state and federal laws pertinent to Law Enforcement.
  • Working knowledge of law enforcement guidelines and criminal investigation methods, and techniques.
  • Working knowledge of traffic accident control measures and investigation methods and techniques.
  • Working knowledge of court procedures.
  • Skill in the use and care of firearms and other law enforcement related equipment.
  • Skill in administering Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and first aid.
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to act quickly and correctly in emergencies.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail.
  • Ability to enforce the law courteously, tactfully, firmly and impartially.
  • Ability to handle confidential information.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to use a computer and related software.
  • Ability to meet specific physical requirements as may be established by competent authority.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Note: Minimum Qualifications MUST be attained before the recruitment ending date.


An Associate’s degree or equivalent (60 semester or 90 quarter hours of study) from an accredited college or university; and

Be 21 years of age or older; and

Be a United States Citizen; and

Successful completion of the Criminal Justice Basics Ability Test (CJBAT) in Law Enforcement; and

Possession of a valid Driver License.

OR


Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; and

Be 21 years of age or older; and

Be a United States Citizen; and

Three (3) years experience as a law enforcement officer (not currently certified in the state of Florida), or Three (3) years active duty U.S. Military service, or Three (3) years service as a certified Detention Deputy or Reserve I or II Deputy with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office; and

Successful completion of the Criminal Justice Basics Ability Test (CJBAT) in Law Enforcement; and

Possession of a valid Driver License.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION AT TIME OF APPLICATION

APPOINTING AUTHORITY REQUIRES

Applicants for this recruitment will be responsible for identifying a certified CJBAT testing facility, enroll and receive a passing score.  Law Enforcement Deputy Trainee applicants will be required to provide proof of having passed the CJBAT exam in order to be placed on the Eligibility List for this recruitment and continue in the selection process.  The minimum passing score for the Law Enforcement version of the CJBAT is 71% (effective November 1, 2008).  The cost of the CJBAT test will be incurred by the applicant. 

Applicants will be responsible for providing the Civil Service Office with the official score report from the CJBAT testing facility. Failure to provide the Civil Service Office with your CJBAT score report will result in your name NOT being placed on the Eligibility List for this recruitment.

Per the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the FBAT Department is no longer conducting out of state testing.  Only remote in-state testing is being conducted.  Any inquiries should be directed to the Criminal Justice Training & Standards Division at the Florida Department of Law Enforcement by calling (850) 410-8600.

Appointing Authority ALSO Requires:

  • Possession of a valid Florida driver's license at time of employment.
  • No more than 3 moving violations within the past five years including adjudication withholds.

SPECIAL PROBATIONARY NOTE

A one year probationary period will begin upon promotion to Law Enforcement Deputy.

SPECIAL NOTES

  • Employees in this class are required to complete a two (2) week Sheriff’s Orientation Training (S.O.T.), thirty two week (32) Law Enforcement Academy at Hillsborough Community College and a Ten (10)  week Sheriff’s Module Training.
  • The mandatory S.O.T. is an intensive, residential, paramilitary influenced program which encompasses two (2) weeks of rigorous physical training and basic recruit instruction. 
  • Recruits are housed in billets located at the Walter C. Heinrich Practical Training Site for the duration of the training with the exception of the weekends. 
  • Upon successful completion of S.O.T., recruits advance to the level of “cadets” and begin formal academy instruction.
  • Upon certification by the Agency Head or designated representative of successful completion of training and graduation, incumbents will be promoted to Law Enforcement Deputy.
  • The training period may be extended by the Agency to which the position is assigned.
