MAJOR FUNCTION

Performs security duties in a direct supervision jail system, responsible for the care, custody, and control of persons incarcerated in a County jail facility, to include the maintenance of order and the inspection of inmate quarters. Duties are performed under the general supervision of an immediate supervisor who evaluates performance through observation of work, periodic conferences, critiques, and/or records and reports.

MAJOR DUTIES

NOTE: The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform some or all of the activities described below.

  • Supervises inmate activities as directed by established policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Observes conduct and behavior of inmates to prevent disturbances and escapes.
  • Inspects locks, windows, grills, doors and gates for signs of tampering.
  • Searches inmates and quarters for contraband articles.
  • Supervises, directs and maintains order during inmate work assignments.
  • Observes assigned areas for evidence of unauthorized activities, infractions of rules, unsatisfactory attitudes or unsatisfactory adjustment of inmates.
  • Reports observations to superiors.
  • Transports inmates to other facilities as required.
  • Performs duties outside the facility as required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; and
Be 21 years of age or older; and
Be a United States citizen; and
Possess a current certification by the State of Florida as a Correctional Officer (Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission Basic Recruit Certificate); and
Possess a valid Driver License.

OR

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; and
Be 21 years of age or older; and
Be a United States citizen; and
Possess a current Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC) certificate attained within the last four years; and
Possess a valid Driver License.

OR

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; and
Be 21 years of age or older; and
Be a United States citizen; and
Have graduated from a Florida Department of Law Enforcement Corrections Academy; and
Attained a passing score on the State of Florida certification examination; and
Possess a valid Driver License.


REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION AT TIME OF APPLICATION

APPOINTING AUTHORITY REQUIRES

  • Possession of a valid Florida driver's license at time of employment.
  • No more than 3 moving violations within the past five years including adjudication withholds.
  • No more than 5 moving violations during driving history including adjudication withholds.
  • No illegal drug sale.
  • No illegal drug use within the past 36 months.
  • No illegal drug use after 30 years of age.
  • No felony convictions.
  • No misdemeanor convictions involving perjury, false statement or domestic violence.
  • Prior military personnel must not have a dishonorable discharge from any branch of the United States Armed Forces, the United States Coast Guard, National Guard or Reserve Forces.
  • Successful completion of a Physical Abilities Test.
  • Meeting all medical and physical requirements.
  • No tattoos or body piercings that are visible while wearing the required uniform.
  • No use of any tobacco products within the previous six (6) months at the time of application.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background investigation.
  • Legal residence in Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk or Manatee County on date of hire.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION AT TIME OF APPLICATION:  

A copy of each of the following documents if used to meet the qualifications:

    Current certification by the State of Florida as a Correctional Officer (Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission Basic Recruit Certificate).

    Current Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC) certificate.

    Certificate of completion of a Florida Department of Law Enforcement Corrections Academy.

    Evidence of a passing score on the State of Florida certification examination.

    A copy of a valid Driver License.
