MAJOR FUNCTION

Performs duties planning, organizing, and directing therapeutic recreational activities for physically, psychologically, or acutely disabled individuals, senior citizens and other persons with special needs.

MAJOR DUTIES

Note: The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform some or all of the activities described below.

  • Plans, organizes, and directs recreation programs and activities for the physical, temporary physical, psychological, acutely disabled individuals, and senior citizens.
  • Contributes to and shares in staff conferences, staff development and inservice training programs, and other procedures designed to improve service to program participants.
  • Assists in the preparation and implementation of educational programs for program participants and their families.
  • May supervise employees and volunteers assigned to assist with the program.
  • Maintains records of client care.
  • Makes recommendations for the acquisition of recreational equipment and supplies.
  • Assists in identifying special funding or grant programs and in completing the applications for such programs.
  • Serves as liaison between the unit or program and other public and private agencies serving the program clients.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Considerable knowledge of the theories, techniques and practices of recreational therapy.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and techniques of music, arts and crafts, drama, dance, and other recreational therapy areas.
  • Working knowledge of applicable departmental and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to plan and organize work.
  • Ability to lift and carry weights up to 90 pounds.
  • Ability to teach, coach and participate in a variety of sports, handicraft, and social recreational activities for the disabled.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with program participants, co-workers and volunteers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Note: Minimum Qualifications MUST be attained before the recruitment ending date.

Graduation from an accredited four year degree granting college or university with a major in Therapeutic Recreation, Adaptive Physical Education, Recreation, Special Education, or a related field; and
One year of experience providing therapeutic recreation to special needs population.

OR

An Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Therapeutic Recreation, Adaptive Physical Education, Recreation, Special Education, or a related field; and
Two years of experience providing therapeutic recreation to special needs population.

OR

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; and
Three years of experience providing therapeutic recreation to special needs population.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION AT TIME OF APPLICATION

APPOINTING AUTHORITY MAY REQUIRE

Possession of a valid Driver License.

Possession of a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver License (CDL); and/or First-Aid and/or CPR Certification; and/or  

A high level skill in riding, care and control of horses.

Possession of a Therapeutic Riding Instructor Certification within one year of initial hire date.
