MAJOR FUNCTION

Performs responsible clerical-bookkeeping duties involving the preparation, processing and maintenance of a variety of records and documentation of financial transactions.

MAJOR DUTIES

Note: The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position. Depending on the particular agency, division, department to which they are assigned, individual employees may perform all or any of the duties described below.

  • Maintains general books of accounts according to established accounting classifications; posts financial data to ledgers, journals and other record books; verifies and reconciles entries.
  • Compiles data and prepares a variety of reports and accounting statements.
  • Receives, collects, processes and records payments and fees; may perform cashier duties involved in the payment of various fees for official documents; may process payment information through a computerized accounting system; reviews completed entry to ensure accuracy.
  • Verifies deposits, and reports cash and negotiable instruments collected for payment of taxes, automobile registration fees, or a variety of licenses.
  • Verifies claims, checks warrants, and vouchers for arithmetic accuracy, legality, and budget classification; prepares and approves vouchers for payment.
  • Maintains accounting records and files.
  • May oversee the activities of lower level accounting clerks.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Working knowledge of accounting/bookkeeping practices, methods and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations controlling the processing of official record documents and fiscal record keeping.
  • Some knowledge of office equipment and ability to use calculator efficiently.
  • Some knowledge of and ability to use computerized accounting systems.
  • Skill in public contact in person and over the telephone, if required.
  • Ability to perform accounting/bookkeeping tasks of moderate difficulty independently.
  • Ability to perform arithmetic calculations rapidly and accurately.
  • Ability to prepare complete and accurate accounting reports and statements.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Note: Minimum Qualifications MUST be attained before the recruitment ending date.


Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; and
Two years of experience in bookkeeping or financial record keeping; and
A passing score on a written test; and
A passing score on a data entry test at 100 gross keystrokes per minute with 90% accuracy.

OR

Graduation from an accredited four year degree granting college or university with a major in any business field; and
A passing score on a written test; and
A passing score on a data entry test at 100 gross keystrokes per minute with 90% accuracy.

OR

An Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in accounting; and
One year of experience in bookkeeping or financial record keeping; and
A passing score on a written test; and
A passing score on a data entry test at 100 keystrokes per minute with 90% accuracy.

OR

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; and
Successful completion of a vocational/technical course in bookkeeping or financial record keeping; and
One year of experience in bookkeeping or financial record keeping; and
A passing score on a written test; and
A passing score on a data entry test at 100 keystrokes per minute with 90% accuracy.

CONCLUSION

OPEN AND CLOSED RECRUITMENTS:  We are running concurrent Closed (Internal) and Open recruitments. Internal candidates on a closed eligibility list must be considered first, prior to a selection being made from the open eligibility list. To be considered for the same classification under Open recruitment, internal candidates must also apply under the open recruitment process.
