Summary Statement

This is the first level in the series responsible for performing the full range of essential functions.

Selective Requirement

Selective Requirements must be met in addition to the job requirements.  Applicants who do not possess the selective requirement will not be qualified.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.
  • Instructs and oversees inmates in vocational trades in a classroom, workshop and/or in a vocational trades shop or construction site.
     
  • Instructs inmates in the proper use of power equipment and hand-tools.
     
  • Instructs and oversees inmates in the cleaning, lubricating and adjustment of equipment and tools.
     
  • Enforces rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
     
  • Maintains discipline, order, and security in assigned locations.
     
  • Prepares various reports and maintains accurate records.
     
  • Maintains an effective working relationship with inmates by inspiring their confidence and cooperation.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Correctional Officer/Trades Instructor I
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. At least 19 1/2 years of age.
  2. Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  3. Six months experience in vocational trades such as carpentry, plumbing, furniture repair, auto mechanics, computer technology or printing.
  4. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Additional Posting Information

Applicants may only apply if they are current permanent employees of the State of Delaware Department of Correction in a position covered by the Merit System who have completed their initial probationary period.

In-Line Statement - Appointees other than in-line promotions must successfully complete a Department training course in security and related areas prior to assignment.  This course is administered by the Department of Correction at the Employment Development Center.  Coursework includes physical, classroom, and hands-on training.  Instruction is provided in the areas of inmate supervision, defensive tactics, riot control, weapons, report writing, and emergency medical training.

Employees in a qualifying Correctional Officer (CO) series position will be eligible to retire after completing twenty-five (25) years of pension creditable State service with at least twenty (20) of those years of pension creditable service in a CO series classified position at the time of retirement.

Conditions of Hire

Union:  As a condition of accepting employment, the person selected for this position shall join and pay dues to the labor organization or may, instead not join but pay a service fee no greater than the dues.  The labor organization has been elected by employees as their representative for collective bargaining and other work related purposes.
