Summary Statement

This position reports to the Roadside Environmental Administrator in Maintenance and Operations.  This position is responsible for supervising a team of two employees as well as casual seasonal/part-time employees.  This position administers several maintenance contracts for control of roadside vegetation and coordinates the development of the Department's pesticide application, hazardous tree removal, brush trimming programs, to include utilization of the GIS system.  This position also assists with preparation of budget requests, estimates, and quarterly financial status reports.

Essential Functions

  • Reviews construction plans to determine field constructability of all erosion and sediment control methods/devices to be used throughout the construction process; long term storm water control features and landscape designs including fixed features and vegetative specimens. Comments on designs and recommends plan modifications.
     
  • Meets with project inspectors and contractors to identify wetland boundaries, review and approve field changes, and explain site non-compliance and how to comply with state and Federal regulations. Recommends work stoppage if contractor fails to comply.
     
  • Coordinates field inspections and fieldwork including all maintenance, repairs, replacements; pesticide applications; care and maintenance of all native and introduced vegetation. 
      
  • Determines when roadside maintenance work can be done in house or requires specialty contractors. Coordinates with operations staff or justifies and coordinates the contracted activities with staff activities. Inspects contracted planting and overall landscape work. Recommends payment/corrections.
     
  • Inspects plant materials at the source, accepting or rejecting due to plant health.
     
  • Inspects stormwater management facilities and reports failures/potential failures.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Roadside Environmental Supervisor
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Six months experience in landscape design and maintenance work including planting and seeding.
  2. Six months experience in pesticide application and safety standards.
  3. Six months experience in contract management and control which includes ensuring compliance with terms of contracts; negotiating changes to existing contracts.
  4. Six months experience in interpreting laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
  5. Knowledge of staff supervision acquired through course work, academic training, training provided through an employer, or performing as a lead worker overseeing the work of others; OR supervising staff which may include planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others; OR supervising through subordinate supervisors a group of professional, technical, and clerical employees.

Conditions of Hire

Criminal background check:  A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire.  The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.
