Summary Statement

This position will work with regulatory programs to evaluate permit applications associated with on-site wastewater treatment and disposal systems to ensure compliance with accepted practices and standards. Principal duties include the review of engineered and gravity septic systems, review of soil evaluations, site assessments and remediation, compliance and enforcement activities, database management, and interaction with the public, elected officials, agency staff and the regulated community.

Preferred Qualification

Applicants who do not possess the preferred qualification will still be eligible to compete for this position if job requirements are met.

  1. Knowledge of wastewater technologies, performing soil evaluations, and completing site assessments and remediation.

Essential Functions

  • Conducts field studies or inspections and evaluations for compliance with permit and regulatory requirements; observes, collects, analyzes, reviews and interprets data from standard field studies, compliance inspections, various regulatory submissions or literature and makes recommendations.
     
  • Performs statistical analysis of data.
     
  • Conducts technical reviews and makes recommendations on permit applications or other various regulatory submissions to ensure compliance with regulations.
     
  • Prepares permits, technical reports and/or enforcement case documents.
     
  • Responds to technical/regulatory inquiries from other state, local and federal agencies as well as public and private organizations or individuals.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Environmental Scientist II
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Life, Physical, or Applied Science or related field.
  2. Six months experience in analyzing and evaluating scientific data.
  3. Six months experience in interpreting laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
  4. Six months experience in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
  5. Six months experience in technical report writing.
