Summary Statement

This class is responsible for a comprehensive highway equipment maintenance program at various facilities throughout the State.

Essential Functions

  • Plans, schedules, supervises, trains, and provides technical assistance to shop staff involved in a comprehensive equipment maintenance program.
     
  • Evaluates equipment operation, maintenance and repair on a regular basis to identify problems and ensure technical acceptability.
     
  • Investigates, evaluates, and recommends the purchase of new equipment.
     
  • Serves as member of Certification Committee testing employees on proper use of equipment.
     
  • Assists in preparing all work rules, regulations, safety guidelines, procedures, and preventative maintenance plans.
     
  • Evaluates and recommends the most cost effective methods for providing equipment repair and maintenance for assigned facility.
     
  • May plan, schedule and direct the operation of auto parts room ensuring maintenance of proper inventory levels.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Highway Equipment Superintendent
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Six months experience in managing an equipment fleet including preventative maintenance, inventory management, repair, and replacement.
  2. Six months experience in operating heavy equipment used in highway construction/maintenance.
  3. Six months experience in staff supervision of two or more employees which includes to plan, assign, review, discipline, recommend hire, promotion, termination and administer performance plans and reviews.

Pre-employment Drug Testing:  Upon a conditional offer, you must undergo pre-employment drug testing as part of the hiring process.

DelDOT Medical Exam:  Applicants who meet the job requirements for the position, and who are made a conditional offer of employment, shall be required to meet the physical qualifications and examination requirements of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations to hold a commercial driver’s license unless they are approved for either an Intra-State CDL Waiver of a Federal Waiver or Exemption.  In addition, applicants must not have incurred four or more serious traffic violations during the previous three years as defined by the Federal Motor Carrier Code.  The Department of Transportation will obtain driving record information maintained by the Division of Motor Vehicles for the preceding three year period.

As a condition of hire you must possess a valid CDL Class A or B drivers license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving) OR obtain one during the initial 90-day probationary period. 

Union:  As a condition of accepting employment, the person selected for this position shall join and pay dues to the labor organization or may, instead not join but pay a service fee no greater than the dues.  The labor organization has been elected by employees as their representative for collective bargaining and other work related purposes.
