Summary Statement

Primary responsibilities include educating visitors to Fort Delaware on the importance of bats, the effect of White-nose Syndrome on bats and what people can do to help protect bats. Position will include escorting people through parts of the fort where bats hibernate and making sure that park visitors are aware of rules and guidelines and ways they can help protect bats.Will also be responsible for maintaining decontamination equipment and helping keep decontamination stations clean and well-stocked. Other duties may include assisting park visitors and helping with other wildlife projects as needed. At least one day per week (more in the spring and fall) will be spent assisting with other bat projects that may include bat catches, telemetry, and acoustic surveys and data entry.  Applicants must be available to work weekends and holidays, willing to work around boats and water and willing to work under various field and weather conditions (biting insects, hot and cold conditions, and long hours).

Essential Functions

  • Participates in or conducts environmental education or interpretation outreach activities, interacting with students, teachers and the general public.
  • Performs biological field sampling and/or provides laboratory assistance.
  • Assists in the field with conservation or habitat management projects, and/or with applied research projects or operational procedures.
  • Maintains records and reports detailing daily activities (both manually and electronically as appropriate).
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.
  • May assist in processing biological samples.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  1. Knowledge of working with children and young adults such as academic/athletic tutoring, camp counselor, youth volunteer, classroom assistant or education teacher.
  2. Knowledge of environmental education.
  3. Knowledge of public speaking or interpretation.
  4. Knowledge of capturing, handling and banding bats.

Conditions of Hire

Criminal background check:  A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire.  The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.
