Summary Statement

The seasonal park Interpreter position is responsible for developing and conducting interpretive programs that will increase the student’s and visitor’s awareness of their environment while fostering the appreciation, enjoyment and utilization of Delaware State Parks cultural and natural resources.  Duties may vary for each facility.  Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions.  Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings and holidays as scheduled.

Essential Functions

  • Lead school environmental education or historical education programs tied to state standards to increase student understanding of Delaware’s natural and cultural resources.
  • Develop and maintain exhibits, park bulletin boards and educational material.
  • Provide general customer service and park information to visitors.
  • May provide live animal care and handling.
  • Plans, organizes and conducts interpretive walks and tours.
  • Set-up, monitoring and clean-up support for park programs and special events.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Must demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Seasonal Park Interpreter

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas.

  1. Six months experience working with children and young adults such as academic/athletic tutoring, camp counselor, youth volunteer, classroom assistant or education teacher. 
  2. Knowledge of natural, cultural, historical resources or parks and recreation.
  3. Knowledge of public speaking or interpretation.
  4. Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
