Summary Statement

This position looks outward to identify key enterprise IT trends such as cloud computing and data architecture, products and services, and is responsible for evaluating technology/IT solutions across industry providers, promoting new technologies from sand-box to production, administering a Research & Development environment, helping the Project Teams get up to speed with new technology, and negotiating contracts with key business and IT industry providers.

Essential Functions

  • Evaluates new technologies, researches new products, and documents the product specifications as related to the State’s infrastructure environment.
  • Incubates ideas in a Research and Development “Sand Box” and decides when it is appropriate to integrate a new technology that has been identified by the Enterprise Architect manager.
  • Plans, configures, documents and tests the architectural design of a system or platform solution in support of new projects and services.
  • Carries out tests to evaluate various design, concepts, performance and features of the system infrastructure and provides smooth integration (not implementation) of new technology into the State’s IT infrastructure.
  • Analyzes forecast numbers and models to adequately forecast system requirements.
  • Answers reasonably detailed questions concerning all emerging IT objects.
  • Provides a migration path for new technology that has been identified by the Enterprise Architect manager as a strategic direction.
  • Provides assistance, communication and knowledge transfer in the new technology to Project Teams.
    Interacts with the Project Teams to create and/or review requirements, functional specifications, and detailed designs.
  • Works with Project Teams and vendors to resolve escalated operational problems and provides ongoing Tier III support for product implementations.
  • Identifies obsolete and perhaps risky existing implementations of technology.
  • Negotiates/contracts with key business and IT industry providers.

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Enterprise Architect

  1. Possession of a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, MIS, Business Administration or related field OR sufficient experience in a business or government setting to satisfactorily demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this role is desirable.
  2. Knowledge of emerging business and IT trends and how they may relate. 
  3. Knowledge of all domains of technology including but not limited to mainframe, network-centric systems, relational database management systems, telecommunications and networks (LAN, WAN. voice, data, video and radio), data warehouse, data architecture, geographic information systems, applications development and systems security.
  4. Detailed knowledge of new tools, languages, System Design Life Cycle methodology, etc.
  5. Knowledge of enterprise IT architecture and standards including architectures with the cloud.
  6. Experience in evaluating enterprise technology/IT solutions across industry providers.
  7. Experience in applying principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of technical and practical problems.
  8. Experience mediating, negotiating and writing contracts with key business and IT industry providers.
  9. Experience with leading and partnering with technical project teams, including State technical and business users, as well as outside consultants and contractors.
  10. Experience in methods and procedures of effective project facilitation.
  11. Experience in presenting oral, written and visual materials to individuals and groups.
  12. Candidates in this position must be highly motivated and self-starters.
