Summary Statement

A class incumbent performs at the advanced level and carries out preventative maintenance, electrical work, HVAC maintenance and repair, and/or restoration activities in one or more of the traditional trades fields on structures, systems and equipment to help ensure efficient operation of a physical plant.

Essential Functions

  • Performs preventative routine and complex maintenance repairs on interior and exterior building structures, fixtures and appurtenances; heavy duty structural and mechanical equipment or HVAC and other systems.
     
  • Performs restoration and renovation on facilities, builds partitions, shelving from sketches, plans or instructions, renovates furniture and equipment and designs layout to ensure most efficient use of space.
     
  • Recommends referral of jobs beyond financial or capability limits to private contractors.
     
  • Maintains and repairs compressor, pumps, hydraulic lifts, treatment and disposal plants and operates and maintains HVAC systems, and complex electrical and plumbing projects.
     
  • Operates and maintains life safety devices such as auxiliary generators, sprinkler systems and emergency lighting.
     
  • Makes necessary sketches and recommends changes to blue prints on any renovation or new installation to meet applicable class.
     
  • Oversees the work of skilled, semi-skilled maintenance, labor and inmate work force in performing specific assignments or in a training situation.
     
  • Maintains records of work performed, materials used and time spent on assignments and secures through established procedures, materials and supplies.
     
  • Maintains security of all tools, supplies, equipment and assigned inmates, participates in cell, building and grounds searches for contraband, weapons and escapees as required.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for CO/Physical Plant Maintenance/Trades Technician
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Possession of a Delaware Journeyperson or higher Electrician license or eligibility for a Delaware license.
  2. Six months experience in performing work in a variety of trades fields such as plumbing, carpentry, painting or HVAC.
  3. Six months experience in record keeping.
  4. Knowledge of interpreting blueprints, schematics or technical drawings.
  5. Knowledge of estimating cost, time and materials for projects.
  6. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Additional Posting Information

DOC Special Requirement: Prior to institutional assignment, candidates must successfully complete all phases of a nine-week Correctional Officer Basic Course. This course is administered by the Department of Correction at the Employee Development Center. Coursework includes physical, classroom and hands-on training. Instruction is provided in the areas of inmate supervision, defensive tactics, riot control, weapons, report writing and emergency medical training.

Incumbents working four or more hours of work between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. the following day will receive 5% shift differential pay.

The Correctional Officer Training Program is approved by the Veterans Administration of Delaware State Approving Authority for the training of Veterans

Selected incumbent is eligible for Hazardous Duty Pay Level A-1, $3,120 upon completion of the basic Correctional Employee Initial Training (CEIT) course.


Conditions of Hire

Union:  As a condition of accepting employment, the person selected for this position shall join and pay dues to the labor organization or may, instead not join but pay a service fee no greater than the dues.  The labor organization has been elected by employees as their representative for collective bargaining and other work related purposes.

Selection Process
