Summary Statement

The seasonal Camp Director/Park Interpreter positions are responsible for planning and coordinating activities for summer camps as well as conducting school group programs during the spring.  Duties include creating and maintaining a fun, positive and safe camp environment for campers and staff.  Work is performed under various weather conditions.  Applicants must be available Monday through Friday throughout the camp season.  Additional work on weekends, evenings and holidays may be scheduled.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all position in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.  Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.

  • Plan and lead daily activities for summer camps.
  • Lead outdoor sport activities such as tubing, canoeing, fishing, and mountain biking.
  • Develop new games and activities.
  • Ensure a fun, educational and safe environment for children.
  • Assist with First-Aid duties.
  • Supervise and mentor summer camp team.
  • Provide general customer service and park information to visitors.
  • May provide live animal care and handling.
  • Plans, organizes and conducts interpretive walks and tours.
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. At least 20 years of age.
  2. One year experience working in a camp program for children or young adults.
  3. One year experience in supervising groups, staff or volunteers.  
  4. Knowledge of natural, cultural, historical resources or parks and recreation.
  5. Knowledge of local plants, animals or history.
  6. Knowledge of public speaking or interpretation.
  7. Knowledge of various recreational activities such as hiking, mountain biking, boating, rock climbing or swimming.
  8. Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
