Summary Statement

This position is responsible for completing Solid and Hazardous Waste Section project officer responsibilities at major solid waste facilities such as DSWA landfills and Waste Management DRPI landfill. The position is essential in reviewing permit renewal/modification applications, plans and reports on a timely basis.  In addition, the position is responsible for compliance assessments and corrective actions at the assigned waste facilities.  This position is state and federal grant funded and requires timely completion of specific work plan assignments in order to maintain funding and to insure protection of human health and the environment.

Essential Functions

  • Conducts field studies or inspections and evaluations for compliance with permit and regulatory requirements; observes, collects, analyzes, reviews and interprets data from standard field studies, compliance inspections, various regulatory submissions or literature and makes recommendations.
     
  • Performs statistical analysis of data.
     
  • Conducts technical reviews and makes recommendations on permit applications or other various regulatory submissions to ensure compliance with regulations.
     
  • Prepares permits, technical reports and/or enforcement case documents.
     
  • Responds to technical/regulatory inquiries from other state, local and federal agencies as well as public and private organizations or individuals.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Environmental Scientist III 
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Life, Physical, or Applied Science or related field.
  2. Six months experience in environmental or natural resources project management which includes planning, developing, implementing, managing and evaluating environmental or natural resources projects to ensure objectives are met.
  3. Three years experience in analyzing and evaluating scientific data.
  4. Three years experience in interpreting environmental laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  5. Six months experience in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
  6. Six months experience in technical report writing.
