Engineer I

The primary duty will be to assist with Statewide Bridge Safety Inspections. Roughly 75% of time will be spent in field inspecting various types of bridges. Secondary duties may include performing Load Rating Analyses for various bridge types, processing superload permits, working on paint projects and assisting with open-end maintenance contracts. Also, you will be required to attend and successfully pass the NIH two-week comprehensive Bridge Safety Inspection Course.

Upon satisfactory completion of department promotional standards and job requirements, employees may be eligible to be promoted to the next level.

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.  Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.

• Drafts, develops and modifies engineering designs, plans and specifications.
   
• Reviews permit applications, blueprints and/or designs prepared by others to ensure compliance with specifications and regulations.
   
• Applies the principles and theories of science and mathematics to research and develop solutions to technical problems.
   
• Plans and conducts field studies, surveys, research and development projects, inspections and/or investigations to collect data and ensure conformance to state/federal laws and regulations.
   
• Tests or evaluates materials, equipment, systems and facilities.
   
• Plans and coordinates engineering projects.
   
• Reviews, analyzes and reports on the status of projects and/or regulatory conformance.
   
• Develops cost estimates for project time and materials.
   
• Provides technical guidance and training to technical staff.

1. Possession of a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Civil Engineering or have an anticipated graduation date within 9 months or official notice of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).

As a condition of hire you must possess a valid CDL Class B driver's license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving) or obtain one during the initial probationary period.

Pre-employment Drug Testing:  Upon a conditional offer, you must undergo pre-employment drug testing as part of the hiring process. 

DelDOT Medical Exam:  Applicants who meet the job requirements for the position, and who are made a conditional offer of employment, shall be required to meet the physical qualifications and examination requirements of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations to hold a commercial driver’s license unless they are approved for either an Intra-State CDL Waiver of a Federal Waiver or Exemption.  In addition, applicants must not have incurred four or more serious traffic violations during the previous three years as defined by the Federal Motor Carrier Code.  The Department of Transportation will obtain driving record information maintained by the Division of Motor Vehicles for the preceding three year period.
