Summary Statement

This position serves as a Casual/Seasonal Security Officer for the Department of Labor’s Blue Hen location in Dover, Delaware. The incumbent will make regular rounds of the facility to ensure that all is in order, prepare incident reports, detain trespassers, violators, and confiscate contraband when members of the public bring unauthorized items inside the building. The incumbent is also responsible for security assessments, resolving security concerns, and making recommendations as to how to improve security.

Essential Functions

  • Enforces institutional policies relative to safety, security and orderliness.
     
  • Make regular rounds of institutional facilities, buildings and grounds to ensure that all is in order.
     
  • Prepares institutional incident reports, maintains a shift activities log, and writes other reports as required.
     
  • Assists in detaining trespassers, violators and potential escapees until proper authorities arrive.
     
  • Assists in searches for missing patients.
     
  • Provides general information to institutional visitors and gives directions as required.
     
  • May be required to provide transportation for patients to outside facilities and institutions.
     
  • Inspects fire extinguishers on a monthly basis.
     
  • May locate and confiscate contraband notifying appropriate authorities.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Security Officer
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Six months experience in security such as providing protective services to persons, facilities or grounds from trespassing, theft and other conditions.
  2. Knowledge of narrative report writing.
  3. Possession of a valid Driver’s License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
