Summary Statement

 The primary duty for this position is to assist with Statewide Bridge Safety Inspections.  Roughly 75% of time is spent in field inspecting various types of bridges.  Secondary duties include performing Load Rating Analyses for various bridge types, processing superload permits, working on paint projects and assisting with open-end maintenance contracts. 

Essential Functions

  • Drafts, develops and modifies engineering designs, plans and specifications.
     
  • Reviews permit applications, blueprints and/or designs prepared by others to ensure compliance with specifications and regulations.
     
  • Applies the principles and theories of science and mathematics to research and develop solutions to technical problems.
     
  • Plans and conducts field studies, surveys, research and development projects, inspections and/or investigations to collect data and ensure conformance to state/federal laws and regulations.
     
  • Tests or evaluates materials, equipment, systems and facilities.
     
  • Plans and coordinates engineering projects.
     
  • Reviews, analyzes and reports on the status of projects and/or regulatory conformance.
     
  • Develops cost estimates for project time and materials.
     
  • Provides technical guidance and training to technical staff.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Engineer I
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Possession of a Bachelor’s of Science degree (or have an anticipated graduation date within 9 months) in Civil Engineering or official notice of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).

Conditions of Hire

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.  DelDOT does not provide employment-based sponsorship.

Pre-employment Drug Testing:  Upon a conditional offer, you must undergo pre-employment drug testing as part of the hiring process.

As a condition of hire, the applicant must agree as a requirement of employment to successfully complete the NHI Two Week Comprehensive Bridge Safety Inspection Course (to be paid for by the Department) and receive a certificate of completion within one year of hire.

As a condition of hire you must possess a valid CDL Class A or B driver's license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving) OR obatain one within the first year of hire.
