Summary Statement

This position will lead a team of interns that work to protect and restore the natural diversity of plants and animals within the Delaware State Park System of Parks and Nature Preserves.  Duties will include control of invasive plant species in state parks utilizing both chemical application and mechanical removal; assist with native and invasive plant surveys and identification; maintain field equipment; and assist with other resource management projects (including wildlife management, and environmental education). Position is based out of the Northern Region of Delaware State Parks which includes Alapocas Run, Bellevue, Brandywine Creek, White Clay Creek, and Wilmington State Parks.

Essential Functions

  • Conducts invasive control by mechanical removal and, as possible, chemical application of invasive plants.
  • Maintains and repairs a variety of field equipment.
  • Maintains records and reports detailing daily activity, tool and equipment inventory, fuel and service logs and related activities.
  • Supervise and lead interns in resource management projects in northern Delaware state parks and designated natural areas.
  • Assist with native and invasive plant surveys and identification.
  • Assist with other resource management projects, including wildlife management, and environmental education.
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  1. Knowledge of land stewardship, plant life, pest or disease control, invasive species identification and management.
  2. Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  3. Knowledge of botany, biological sciences, or natural resources.
  4. Knowledge in supervising groups, staff or volunteers.
  5. Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Additional Posting Information

This is an environmental stewardship summer job, not a summer camp experience; the participants will work in difficult conditions including mud, hot sun, and mosquitoes and flies.
