Summary Statement

This is the second level of paralegal work.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.  Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.
  • Establishes and maintains case files.
     
  • Reviews legal/court documents for completeness and accuracy.
     
  • Compiles and evaluates facts to complete program, legal, and/or court documents.
     
  • Provides administrative reports and recommendations for new/revised operating policies/procedures.
     
  • Reviews state and federal codes, laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance of legal actions/processes. 

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Paralegal II
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Three years experience in preparing and maintaining legal documents and case files.
  2. Six months experience in interpreting laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
  3. Six months experience in interviewing using structured or unstructured interview techniques to obtain facts, explore issues and identify courses of action.
  4. Six months experience in legal research which includes researching statutes, regulations, case law and background information.
  5. Six months experience in analyzing and evaluating data. 

Additional Posting Information

Selected incumbent is eligible for Hazardous Duty Pay Level A, $2,300 upon completion of the basic Correctional Employee Initial Training (CEIT) course.

Conditions of Hire

Union:  As a condition of accepting employment, the person selected for this position shall join and pay dues to the labor organization or may, instead not join but pay a service fee no greater than the dues.  The labor organization has been elected by employees as their representative for collective bargaining and other work related purposes. 

Criminal background check:  A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire.  The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire. 

Pre-employment Drug Testing:  Upon a conditional offer, you must undergo pre-employment drug testing as part of the hiring process.
