Summary Statement

The Division of Fish and Wildlife is hiring two seasonal research assistants to assist with bat projects. Primary responsibilities will include managing volunteers, assisting with live catches of bats, radio telemetry, conducting acoustic surveys and analyzing the calls, resolving bat/human conflicts and managing data. These positions will also include educating visitors to Fort Delaware, a historical fort that conducts living history tours, on the importance of bats, the effect of White-nose Syndrome on bats and what people can do to help protect bats. Duties will also include GIS, database management and report writing. May also assist with Delmarva fox squirrel landowner outreach, camera surveys and other non-bat projects.  Must be able and willing to work nighttime and weekend hours in difficult field conditions (biting insects, hot and cold conditions plus long hours). Weekend and holiday work will be required on a regular basis.

Essential Functions

  • Provides technical support in studies, surveys, inspections and research projects.
  • Collects field samples and data during bat catches and acoustic monitoring. 
  • Provides technical information and assistance to the public (i.e. provides information on options for safe exclusion of bats from homes). 
  • Operates and maintains equipment for acoustic and telemetry surveys (bat detectors, telemetry equipment, etc).
  • Decontaminates equipment. 
  • Maintains accurate records and prepares reports. 
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.
  • May assist in processing biological samples.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Must be 18 years old. Knowledge of conducting field work to collect samples and survey data.
  2. Knowledge of using a Geographic Information System (GIS). Knowledge of narrative report writing.
  3. Knowledge of Wildlife biology/management or closely related field.
  4. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Additional Posting Information

Applicant must prove Rabies immunity or agree to complete Rabies vaccination (paid for by the employer).

Criminal background check: A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire.  The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire. 

**This is an environmental stewardship summer job, not a summer camp experience; the participants will work hard, sometimes in difficult conditions including mud, hot sun, and mosquitoes and flies.
