Summary Statement

A class incumbent is responsible for tagging and securing evidence while preserving the chain of custody for all evidence submitted to the Division of Forensic Science.

Nature and Scope

A class incumbent reports to a technical supervisor and is responsible for receiving, tagging and securing evidence while preserving the chain of custody for all evidence submitted to the Division of Forensic Science.  In addition, the incumbent informs law enforcement officers of the appropriate chain of custody maintenance process.  A class incumbent is responsible for maintaining records on these cases as well as testifying in court about the evidence submission process.

Essential Functions

  • Receives, tags, secures and maintains a strict chain of custody for evidence submitted by law enforcement agencies in the State for analysis.
     
  • Establishes and maintains case records.
     
  • Testifies in court related to the evidence submission process.
     
  • Photographs submitted evidence.
     
  • Transfers evidence within the Division of Forensic Science.
     
  • Schedules appointments with law enforcement agencies for the submission and return of evidence.
     
  • Assists in scheduled inventory of evidence storage locations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The intent of the listed knowledge, skills and abilities is to give a general indication of the core requirements for all positions in the class series; therefore, the KSA’s listed are not exhaustive or necessarily inclusive of the requirements of every position in the class.

  • Knowledge of the general principles of DNA evidence, toxicological specimens, various drugs, chemical substances, and drug paraphernalia.
  • Knowledge of receiving, tagging and preserving evidence.
  • Knowledge of photographic techniques.
  • Ability to maintain strict chain of custody in accordance with established protocol.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Forensic Evidence Specialist 
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Six months experience in using standard computer software programs for word processing, spreadsheets or databases.
  2. Six months experience in record keeping.
  3. Knowledge of forensic, lab and legal terminology.
  4. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
