Summary Statement

A class incumbent is responsible for interviewing, making recommendations and assisting clients in utilizing available resources to meet personal, social, health and economic needs in order to develop their self sufficiency.

Nature and Scope

An incumbent in this class receives supervision from a technical or administrative superior, and is involved in interviewing and gathering data, assessing client needs and eligibility and directing individual to proper channels and aiding in securing assistance. A class incumbent is responsible for developing contacts with community resources, doing follow up on clients to prevent service duplication, and providing informational materials and assistance to individuals/groups on available programs. Incumbents keep records, complete forms and prepare required reports. Concurrently an incumbent may coordinate one or more programs such as hypertension, EDSPT and low income transportation.

  • Provides information and referral services to enable clients to meet individual needs.
     
  • Informs individuals of Federal, State and local programs/services available. 
     
  • Acts on behalf of individual or group to obtain services if necessary.
     
  • Maintains record of all requests for services and classifies them.
     
  • Acts as substitute for other workers when needed and provides coverage for other DSSC
    programs as assigned.
     
  • Performs follow up activities with clients to assure client is receiving needed services as well
    as meeting their responsibilities.
     
  • Provides transportation and schedules clients eligible for assistance.

  • Knowledge of human service programs and other resources.
  • Knowledge of program rules, regulations and procedures and service requirements.
  • Knowledge of basic math computations.
  • Skill in eliciting accurate adequate information and making appropriate referrals.
  • Skill in oral and written communication and interpersonnel relations.
  • Skill in implementing rules, regulation procedures to variety of situations.
  • Ability to maintain up-to-date information system.
  • Ability to deal with people from diverse backgrounds.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Social Service Specialist I
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
  1. Six months experience in record keeping.
  2. Six months experience in applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  3. Six months experience in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
  4. Knowledge of health or human services support such as interviewing clients and assessing personal, health, social or financial needs in accordance with program requirements or coordinating with community resources to obtain client services.
