Description of Occupational Work

This class series uses three levels of work in the Labor, Trades and Crafts Occupational Group, Custodial and Laundry Services Occupational Series and describes correctional officer and laundry activities in a correctional laundry facility.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.

  • Maintains security of a laundry facility by conducting inspections, monitoring inmate activities, taking inmate counts at specified times and searching inmates.
     
  • Assigns, oversees and evaluates the work of inmates.
     
  • Trains inmate workers in laundry procedures.
     
  • Oversees the weighing of all laundry, mixing of chemicals and operation of equipment by inmates.
     
  • Performs routine maintenance on laundry equipment such as oiling and greasing parts and changing belts to ensure proper operations. Ensures cleanliness and sanitation of laundry facilities.
     
  • Maintains inventory control; oversees supplies used, distribution and laundering of inmate clothing and linens and uniforms for security staff.

Levels of Work

Correctional Officer/Laundry Operator
 
The first level in the Correctional Officer/Laundry Series is responsible for performing the full range of essential functions.

  • Reports to a technical superior.
  • Delivers and retrieves laundry from the units according to a predetermined schedule; verifies accuracy of laundry counts and reports discrepancies to supervisor.
  • Transports inmates between housing unit and laundry facility.

Correctional Officer/Laundry Supervisor

This level is responsible for supervising and participating in laundry operations.

  • Reports to an administrative superior.
  • Oversees the operation of the laundry, distribution, inventory and control of uniforms.
  • Develops laundry production schedule to meet the needs of the facility and determining annual purchasing needs for supplies, equipment, inmate clothing and linens and uniforms.
  • Prepares various proposals such as projection of long-term needs for laundry equipment and facility needs based on current and projected inmate population.
  • Develops annual purchasing request for laundry and janitorial supplies, inmate clothing/linens, equipment and uniforms for security staff; Submits to superior for reviewand inclusion in the annual budget request.

Correctional Officer/Laundry Manager

This level is responsible for managing the operation of multiple laundry facilities at a large correctional facility. 

  • Supervision is exercised over at least two or more merit full time positions per Merit Rule 5.1460. The elements of supervision include planning, assigning, reviewing, evaluating, coaching, training, recommending hire/fire and discipline.
  • Schedules operations to meet overall needs of the facility.
  • Participates in the training of all new recruits by explaining procedures for ordering and maintaining uniforms.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The intent of the listed knowledge, skills and abilities is to give a general indication of the core requirements for all positions in the class series; therefore, the KSA's listed are not exhaustive or necessarily inclusive of the requirements of every position in the class.

  • Knowledge of correctional security procedures and techniques.
  • Knowledge of facility and departmental rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the techniques of detecting weapons and other contraband.
  • Knowledge of the techniques of self-defense, riot control, use of firearms and other protective equipment.
  • Knowledge of the attitudes, behavior and group habits of persons in custody.
  • Knowledge of the operation of washers, extractors, tumblers, presses and hand and flatwork irons.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of handling contaminated clothing and linen.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of supervising and training inmate workers in laundry operations.
  • Knowledge of inventory control procedures.
  • Skill in self-defense and use of assigned weapons and other protective equipment.
  • Skill in the observation of inmate activities and detection of unusual or prohibited behavior which may be a security threat.
  • Ability to enforce correctional institutional rules, regulations and disciplinary measures with firmness and impartiality.
  • Ability to train inmates in laundry operations.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance on laundry equipment.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to diffuse potentially explosive situations, i.e., inmate fighting and/or threats against other inmates or employees.Ability to act quickly and calmly in an emergency.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.

In addition to the above Knowledge, Skills and Abilities, the Correctional Officer/Laundry Supervisor requires:

  • Knowledge of standard procedures for maintaining security.
  • Knowledge of laundry practices and operating techniques.
  • Knowledge of planning annual supply and equipment needs.
  • Knowledge of the supervision and training of staff and inmate workers.
  • Skill in operating a laundry facility.
  • Skill in the interpretation and application of institutional/departmental rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

In addition to the above Knowledge, Skills and Abilities, the Correctional Officer/Laundry Manager requires:

  • Knowledge of laundry management practices and operating techniques.
  • Skill in the management of multi-site large volume laundry facilities.
  • Skill in planning annual supply and equipment needs.
  • Skill in the supervision and training of staff and inmate workers.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Correctional Officer/Laundry Manager
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. At least 19 and 1/2 years of age.
  2. Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  3. Three years experience in commercial or institutional laundry operations and equipment such as washers, dryers, extractors, tumblers, presses, hand or flat work irons.
  4. Six months experience in inventory control such as ordering, receiving, tracking, storing and handling inventory; disbursing materials, supplies and equipment.
  5. Six months experience in staff supervision which includes planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others.
  6. Possession of a valid Driver’s License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
